The Mothership Seed Collection is a collaborative project between The Mothership, founded by artist Yto Barrada and Glasgow Seed Library with support from CCA: Centre for Contemporary Art, funded by Anhar: Culture and Climate Platform by Art Jameel and British Arts Council. The project focuses on the research and implementation of a seed collection focused on natural dyes. It will include a pilot educational programme to share methodologies to collect, preserve, exchange, and propagate heirloom seeds. During Spring/Summer 2025, the Seed Collection will be public by appointment and through bi-weekly public activations and workshops.
The Seed Collection & Outreach Coordinator position is a 6-month fixed term position, as part of the Seed Collection project, and will coordinate the Seed Collection at The Mothership, related public activities and workshops, and community engagement. The position reflects the research and pilot nature of the project, and we expect that some of the scope of the work and responsibilities will change, as we co-learn and develop the project.
Position Details:
Hours: 2 x 5h days per week / additional hours as needed
Days of work: Flexible, but includes weekdays, Saturdays and occasional evenings.
Location of work: Flexible, mostly on site at The Mothership campus, Tangier; during public workshops and activities location might change.
Contract: Fixed term, 6 months
Start date: June 1, 2025
Salary: 4500 MAD /month
Responsibilities:
Seed Collection
Lead sorting, packing, labeling and archiving of seeds from the Mothership garden
Coordinate seed viability tests with garden team
Source heirloom seeds and plant specimens as needed
Coordinate ordering supplies of envelopes, labels and other materials
Public activations and outreach:
Facilitate access and conduct tours of the natural dye garden and seed collection
Collaborate with Mothership team in developing curriculum for public workshops and activations
Represent the Mothership Seed Collection at public activations and workshops
Collaborate on research and content design for educational materials
Nurture and strengthen existing relationships with community partners and gardens
Essential skills and experience:
Experience in planning, delivering and facilitating public workshops and events.
Interest in seed sovereignty, climate justice, permaculture and/or agroecological ideas and practices
Good communication skills, written and oral
Good administrative and organizational skills
Good problem solving and flexibility
Proficient communicator in English and Arabic. Additional proficiency in French preferred.
Proficient user of digital tools and software, such as google drive, spreadsheets and word processing.
Ability to work independently, across locations and in different community settings
Preferred skills and experience:
Some experience in growing plants, gardening, and/or horticulture
Some experience in seed saving techniques
Some knowledge and experience in natural dyeing (preferred) or willingness to learn.
