Younes Zarhoni
(June 2024)
Younes Zarhoni undertook his initial research for a new work titled "Silence in Do." This piece embodies a balanced interaction among narrative, visual elements, and auditory components, emerging from recently discovered lo-fi digital recordings of a television screen that showcased VHS tapes of a family wedding in the summer of 1999. The artist transforms and amalgamates the material and immaterial dimensions of these archival materials, with particular attention to sound—whether present or absent. During his residency, he emphasized the interplay between sound and color theory, resulting in the creation of a series of graphical scores based on natural color systems and local botanical knowledge.
Younes Zarhoni is a sound artist and visual artist. Born in Antwerp of Moroccan descent, he lives today in Brussels. In recent years, he has translated his personal sonic universe into polyphonic vocal installations, electronic compositions, dance music and field recordings. His visual language is fed and shaped by a fascination with medieval mysticism, botany, nightclub culture and political historiography.
